Pucciniomycotina

Pucciniomycotina includes some of the least characterized lineages of Fungi.  Currently comprised of nine classes, including Puccionomycetes which contains the rust fungal order among others, these fungi are believed to be globally distributed although life histories, ecology, and biology remain a mystery for members of most of these classes.  Our work in this area includes the discovery and description of new taxa as well as improved systematic understanding of the group as a whole, and in pioneering efforts to capture genomic data for at least one member of each major lineage through collaboration with the DOE's Joint Genome Institute.

Mixia osmundae: represents a monotypic lineage of Pucciniomycotina and the smallest known genome for a basidiomycete phytopathogen.

Meredithblackwellia eburnea: new genus discovered on a fern leaf in Guyana & named in honor of Dr. Meredith Blackwell. The pattern of budding in rosettes is unusual and characteristic.

Tritirachium: once believed to be an ascomyceteous "mold", now known to form a class-level lineage in Pucciniomycotina, described in 2011.

Pycnopulvinus aurantiacus: new genus discovered on palm trash, and representing a new lineage of Microbotryomyetes described in 2014.
